High performance video editing demands three things: up-to-date computer memory (RAM), a fast Computer Processing Unit (CPU), and a Solid State Drive (SSD). I’d be tempted to let them get on with it.What is the Best Laptop for Video Editing? A note on the criteria I have to wonder what your involvement is in this purchase? Are you paying for this computer? If not, I think your friend is probably best qualified to determine what computer they need and purchase it.
If they wanted to build their own desktop they could get a much more powerful computer - but your friend must have a use case in mind (working in a uni studio, taking notes in lectures etc etc) and if it’s a portable machine they are after then that won’t be appropriate. If your concern is price per performance obviously there are cheaper computers on the market with some of the same specs, but if someone wants a laptop running macOS then the MBP is almost certainly the right choice.
In terms of ‘standing the test of time’ creative agencies and design departments are full of 5 to 10 year old MacBooks and iMacs that are still chugging along so I wouldn’t worry to much about that.
I would say that in terms of Mac VS PC (cost aside) it’s a preference issue for your friend. It also has a great screen which is helpful for visual work.
The MacBook Pro is a modern powerful computer and will be just as appropriate as any other computer with a modern processor and plenty of ram. So any reasonably powerful modern computer will be perfectly fine for graphic design. Selecting a mouse or tablet is a whole other thing, and even more subjective. Doing design work on a trackpad is masochistic, and whether someone uses a mouse or tablet is entirely a preference issue.
Usually the first issue is budget, but if price isn't a factor here, they should just go to a tech store, whether it's Best Buy, Apple, Microsoft stores, or equivalent, and just try using the laptops first hand, pick them up, use the keyboards, etc. So much of this is really subjective, and will be up to your friend. Beyond that it's entirely just a preference based on subjectivity and budget.īut at the same time, if budget isn't an issue with your friend, and they just want to get a Mac, then that's fine, it'll do what they need. You definitely do not need a Mac for graphic design, unless your specific needs or role requires OS-specific software. Is your friend actually concerned with this? (Who is?)Įven if you don't have a recommendation, as graphics designers, thoughts on getting a 2019 Macbook Pro 15-inch for graphics designs would be very much appreciated! They are willing to pay pretty much for the highest bracket of prices of laptops available in 2019, but I doubt they can manage to pay for a fully spec-ed out Macbook Pro 15-inch.
Holistically, taking into account not just performance but portability, battery life, the display, usability, software and hardware (like pens or other peripherals) compatibility, and price, which laptop would you recommend for them? If we took into account price, the Macbook Pro 15-inch seems to make even less sense. I'm mainly worried that my friend will pay a lot for a machine that doesn't perform as well as competitors, and fail to stand the test of time. What laptops, amongst those that have been released so far in 2019, would you recommend? Even if we don't take into account price, is the Macbook Pro 15-inch 2019 model with the max upgraded specs the best laptop available in the market for graphics design right now? Would performance in Adobe products like Illustrator and Photoshop be limited/affected by the poor heating solution of the Macbook Pro design? However, given my research and understanding of the 2019 Macbook Pro performance, I don't think this is a good choice for their needs. They're pretty set on getting a 2019 Macbook Pro 15-inch with upgrades in specs at purchase. Primarily, their workload involves 2D designing (logos, posters, booklets etc.) with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and at times Lightroom for the occasional light photo editing. They use their laptop as their main computer at school and for work. They're currently a student with some experience with free-lance work and paid ad-hoc projects in graphics design.
